Hi:  Since I miss communicating directly with my Undercover Club family via KDKA Radio, I thought I would begin a periodic update page here on our  Bob Logue Undercover Club Website.  Opinions expressed here are MINE

CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY WE SELL MOTORCYCLES THAT CAN ATTAIN
SPEEDS OF 180 OR MORE MILES PER HOUR FOR USE ON OUR STREETS AND HIGHWAYS.  IF SOMEONE WANTS TO RIDE ON A CLOSED TRACK AT THAT SPEED, FINE...GO AHEAD AND RISK YOU LIFE.  BUT RIDING A MOTORCYCLE AT THESE
VERY HIGH SPEEDS ARE ALSO KILLING INNOCENT MOTORISTS.
ONE OTHER QUESTION ABOUT MOTORCYCLING....WHY DO MOTORCYCLES IN
RACES WHERE EVERYONE IS USUALLY GOING THE SAME DIRECTION...AND
AT ABOUT THE SAME SPEEDS WEAR HELMETS?  AREN'T THEY SUPPOSED TO
BE UNCOMFORTABLE?  AREN'T THEY SUPPOSED TO BLOCK THE RIDERS' VISION?
AREN'T THEY SUPPOSED TO BE VIRTUALLY USELESS IN WRECKS?  THEN WHY NOT
GIVE THE RIDERS IN THE VARIOUS MOTORCYCLE RACES THE OPTION OF RIDING WITHOUT A HELMET.  AND IF THEY ALREADY HAVE THAT OPTION...WHY DO ALL OF THEM WEAR HELMENTS THEN.  PLEASE EXPLAIN.  YOU MAY RESPOND AT ucblogue@verizon.net    THANKS...--BOB LOGUE

Shopper pulls gun, stops robbery cold
Held suspect at grocery store until police officers arrived

A grocery store customer in Indianapolis is being credited with halting an armed robbery by pulling his own weapon and pointing it at the assailant until police arrived.

According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, Charlie Merrell, 51, was in a checkout line at a grocery store called Bucks IGA on the city's south side when a "masked man jumped a nearby counter and held a gun on a store employee."

The police report cited by the newspaper said the incident happened at 5:17 in the afternoon Monday as Merrell was doing some year-end shopping.

"While the suspect was demanding cash from the workers," according to the police report, "Merrell pulled his own handgun, pointed it at the robber and ordered him to put down his weapon."

The newspaper noted that Officer Jason Bockting, in his documentation of the incident, said when the suspect seemed to hesitate, "Merrell racked the slide on his gun to load a round in the chamber."

At that point, the report said, "the suspect placed his gun and a bag of cash on the counter, dropping some of the money … the suspect removed his mask and lay on the floor."

Merrill, meanwhile, held the suspect at gunpoint until officers arrived and took him away in handcuffs.

Police reported Merrell had a valid permit to carry the handgun, and they recovered an unloaded .380-caliber handgun and $779 cash from the suspect.

Police records show Dwain Smith, 19, was being held in the Marion County Jail on a bond of $30,000 on initial charges of robbery, criminal confinement, pointing a firearm, battery and carrying a handgun without a license.

Fascinating perspective.

In the midst of a housing collapse and credit crunch, the impending doom of the U.S. economy is taken as gospel. But look behind the headlines, and the numbers tell a different story. The U.S. economy grew by 3.9% in the credit turmoil-ridden third quarter -- following a 3.1% jump in the second quarter. That means that the United States added the equivalent of a new Saudi Arabia to its economy just since the beginning of April. And the fact that the World Economic Forum ranked the U.S. economy the most competitive economy in the world last week got little press. And even when it did, the #1 ranking of the United States was explained away as a statistical mirage.
This is not to say that the U.S. economy is in ship shape. But with all of the talk about China and India dominating our economic futures, it's worth reminding ourselves where these new economic challengers stand in comparison to the United States today. Despite the high economic growth rates of developing nations, the United States is by far the world's wealthiest nation as measured by GDP -- the broadest measure of economic wealth. And the rest of the world isn't even close. This year, U.S. GDP is projected to be $13.22 trillion. That means that the U.S. economy is as large as the next four-largest economies in the world -- Japan, Germany, China, and the United Kingdom -- combined.
The map below --
originally published here -- puts the size of the United States' global rivals in perspective. On the map, the name of each U.S. state is replaced by a country, whose GDP equals approximately that U.S. state's GSP (gross state product.) A quick glance at the map leads to some fascinating -- and unexpected -- comparisons.
STATES
Standing alone as a country, California would be the eighth-largest economy in the world and approximately the size of France. Texas' economy is half the size of California's and its GSP compares to that of Canada. Florida's GSP is approximately the size of Asian tiger South Korea. Illinois' economy is approximately the size of Mexico. Ohio's economy is roughly the size of Australia's. Tennessee's GSP is the size of Saudi Arabia; Nevada, the size of Ireland; Alabama's economy is the size of Iran. Bill Clinton's home state of Arkansas, one of the poorest states in the United States, is approximately the size of Pakistan's economy.
And what about the United States' nearest rivals? Germany and China -- #3 and #4 on the list of the world's largest economies -- are smaller than the economies of Texas and California combined. India's $800 billion economy is on par with Florida. Brazil, as we see on the map, is comparable to New York. Russia's economy is about the size of New Jersey (or Texas).

Looking through my files (using the term loosely) in preparing a future

West Penn Allegheny Health System\KDKA Undercover Club Newsletter,

I came across this writing.  I thought I would share it with you now:

Past the seeker as he prayed, came the cripple and the

beggar and the beaten.  And seeing them, the holy one

went down into deep prayer and cried, “Great God,

how is it that a loving creator can see such things and

yet do nothing about them?”

And out of the long silence God replied,

“I did do something!    I created you!”   Author Unknown

We just returned from a Mediterranean Vacation…visiting Spain, Italy and France.  The cruise and

sightseeing were terrific.  The 52 people we traveled with were wonderful folks.

The air travel was horrible.  Some airlines seem to be doing everything they can to destroy their

industry.  Air France ‘workers’ decided on a five day walkout on the very day we were to fly

their airline from Atlanta, Georgia to Paris and then on to Barcelona our embarkation port.

Public be damned, this government operated airline (does that tell you anything) was pretty much shutdown.  Thanks to Emerick and Angie Zovko and AAA Travel, all the passengers eventually made it to the cruise.

Some arrived a day late, and some had no luggage for four days, but the ship provided clothing—even

up to an including tuxedoes for the formal night.

Travelers often talk about the hassle of the security operations, but we were not unhappy with

that aspect because the security personnel were respectful –as were we—and got us through relatively

quickly.  The hassle comes with flying 9 hours on a cramped airliner with very limited leg room, and

airliner seats that allow the person in front of you to recline their seat into your lap.

Every airline executive should be required to fly 9 hours on their own airliner with someone’s seat back in their lap.  I would bet none of those execs have ever experienced that.  The arrogance of some of the Air France ticketing personnel and some of their flight attendants was incredible.

The lineup trying to get boarding passes for our flight home on Air France (their employee temper tantrum

had ended) was huge.  And as we stood in line, the arrogant Air France employee decided to shut down

their counter—the only one operating for our flight—and left for at least a half hour.  As hosts of the trip, we

try to always be the last of our group in line, that way we can be sure everyone got through the line.

I confronted an Air France supervisor about why the ticketing line had been shutdown…but she

ignored me and just kept telling to get in line, that the ticketing counter for that flight would re-open

at 8:30 for the 10:30 flight (which boards, by the way, at 10:00.)

The line continued to grow…even out the door to another part of the terminal…and because

many of these were cruise travelers, their luggage was greater than a ‘normal’ traveler.  We probably had 25 people still to go through among our group when the counter reopened.  And there had to be another 50 people or more  behind us who were not with our group.

Finally, two more ‘workers’ arrived and opened two more counters.  But one spent most of the time on the phone laughing and joking with someone, and the other kept fiddling with her computer and helped very few people.

Needless to say the flight was delayed in leaving…but at least 20 minutes.

Perhaps the most telling indication of the Air France arrogance was on the flight itself.  The service was spotty at best…  Then the flight attendants handed out customs declaration forms each family had to fill out to go through customs when they landed in the United States.  Our form was fine, but passengers to the left of us were given

forms in French.  When they very politely asked the flight attendant for a form in English because they

didn’t read or understand French, the male flight attendant said AND I QUOTE:  “I think there are some

English forms further back in the plane…just get up and go get them.”  Nuff said.

Everyone arrived home safely and handled the various travel snafus with a pretty positive attitude.

And they saw wonderful sights and built friendships that will last a lifetime.

Below find my photo of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  A marvelous site to behold in person. Bob

Girl gets detention for hugging friends By Georgina Gustin

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Tuesday, Nov. 06 2007

MASCOUTAH - A 13-year-old junior high school student was given two days of

detention after school officials spotted her hugging friends after school last

Friday.

Megan Coulter, an eighth-grade student at Mascoutah Middle School, was hugging her friends goodbye after school Friday when vice principal, Randy Blakely, saw her and told her she would receive two after-school detentions. Blakely had previously warned Coulter that she was in violation of the school's

policy on public displays of affection after she was seen hugging a student at a football game.

The school's policy says that "displays of affection should not occur on the campus at any time."

Coulter's mother, Melissa Coulter, says she has requested to speak with the School Board at its next meeting, and is mystified about the punishment leveled at her daughter.

Mascoutah Superintendent Sam McGowen said today that the district's policy helps prevent misunderstandings and unwelcome expressions of affection.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF SPINELESS EDUCATION OFFICIALS WITHOUT THE GUTS TO MAKE A JUDGEMENT WHO NEED EVERYTHING SPELLED OUT FOR THEM IN A HANDBOOK.  PATHETIC.  IS PATTING SOMEONE ON THE BACK A SHOW OF AFFECTION?  IS A HANDSHAKE...IF IT LASTS LONGER THAN FOUR SECONDS A SHOW OF  AFFECTION?  -BOB LOGUE.

For those who keep sending me messages about Christianity...love, compassion, prayer, etc....
this is my comment to one of our grassroots STOP members who tried to interest his priest
and church in helping to prevent people from having their homes stolen from them by the county governments across the state, and his priest and church just ignored his request.

They will give us all kinds of lame excuses….like the church can't be involved in politics, etc…and at the same time they are involved (as they should be) in other issues like opposing abortion, cuts in government programs, etcetera.  Christians (and I pick on them because I am one) are turning their backs on the suffering caused by actions of our government to steal people's homes and equity.     And the physical and mental harm that is being done to these fellow Pennsylvanians.

I hear from Christians all the time…sending along pretty messages of love, compassion, etc.; nice photos…pretty music….but ask them to get their hands dirty in fighting to prevent this suffering from continuing…and there is SILENCE.  It's the very reason why churches are closing…or merging…and fewer of us are seeing a relevance in attending church or identifying ourselves with an organization that doesn't live its faith…and certainly doesn't follow the calling of its Saviour.   Faith without works is dead.

Gotta share with you my amazing story of my Black & Decker BV4000 Blower\Vacuum.
We bought our original one about two years ago....and were using it about a year ago
at our former home in Whitehall Borough, a Pittsburgh suburb to vacuum leaves from our back driveway where they tended to gather.  I was raking leaves from among bushes and my wife, Etta was vaccuuming with the BV4000, which she had strapped over her shoulder.  She said to me
I smell something burning.  I looked up and shouted, "Get that thing off your shoulder (the BV4000) it's burning."  The tossed it on the grass and we unplugged it.  The metal prongs coming out of the unit melted as did some of the plastic around it.
I called Black and Decker.  They immediately asked if anyone was hurt.  I told them no.
They directed me to take the power unit to an outlet in Pittsburgh's downtown strip district
and get a replacement.  I did.  For about a year, I used only the vacuum part, never trying
the blower attachment on my new power unit.  A month ago I decided to attach the blower
to the newer power unit and blow dust off the concrete floor of the garage I am having built since the garage is just about done.  The blower wouldn't active the power unit when it was attached.  I E-mailed Black and Decker asking what I should do.   I also mentioned that while visiting their website to get their E-mail address I noted that there was a recall on
the BV4000 units.  They immediately wrote back and said we are sending you a new unit.
Five days later...much sooner than I expected...and entire new BV4000 arrived...the power unit and all the attachments.  It was designed differently with a cord coming out of the unit rather than just the prongs.
This week I put the new blower attachment on the new power unit and was happily blowing
the dust out of the garage...and, no I'm not making this up....the brand new power unit began
throwing off sparks...and yes...it started smoldering.
I called Black and Decker and, yep, they're sending me another new unit.  I wonder if the fact that all these inferior units are made in Mexico has anything to do with this.  They sure haven't made any money on this deal...!  I offered to send the last power unit back so they could
see I wasn't trying to rip them off...but they declined.
If you have one of these units...a BLACK AND DECKER BV4000 BLOWER VAC, GO TO THE BLACK AND DECKER WEBSITE.  THEY ARE BEING RECALLED DUE TO THE DANGER OF A FIRE.

Trying to get anything constructed today is quite a task.  I've had problems with my sizable
garage project and everyone I speak to tells me their horror story about some contractor
they had a problem with.  Some had to fire their contractor and try a second and third one just to get their project completed.  Tell me your story and I'll share it with others.

Regarding the bridge disaster in Minneapolis...here are my questions...perhaps you know the answers:  I wrote this to a friend who wrote to save we have thousands of bridges in this same condition all over the country.

I don't think it is true that we have thousands of bridges in the same condition as this…or it would be happening over and over.   These officials were warned five years ago that this bridge was severely deficient.  Instead of fixing the trusses…they were repairing the concrete floor with jackhammers at the same time as all this traffic was crossing.  Why weren't the trusses addressed first?  Why wasn't the bridge closed during the current construction work?

Why weren't there weight limits posted on the bridge that would have prohibited such heavy traffic on a terribly deficient span?  If there were weight restrictions on the bridge, why were they not being enforced?   When I hear answers to these basic questions, then I will better understand why this happened…and who was at fault.

I have no training in technology...but this question has bothered me for some time about the situation in Iraq.  The roadside bombs, I understand, are detonated by remote control.  Is there no technology that sends out a signal that sweeps through all the possible frequencies that the bombers might use...so the bombs are detonated well in advance of the military units arrival at a particular spot?  Explain to me why that's can't be done.

THE QUICKEST AND MOST EFFECTIVE WAY OF CUTTING AIR POLLUTION AND CONSUMPTION OF GASOLINE AND DIESEL FUEL, WOULD BE FOR TRANSPORATION DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS TO SCRUTINIZE EVERY TRAFFIC LIGHT TO BE SURE THEY ARE NOT UNNECESSARILY DELAYING TRAFFIC.  IF EVERY LIGHT WAS A SMART LIGHT SYSTEM..MEANING IT MONITORED TRAFFIC FLOW AND ADJUSTED HOW LONG THE LIGHTS REMAIN GREEN OR RED, WE WOULD SAVE BILLIONS OF GALLONS OF GASOLINE.  EXAMPLE:  IN FRONT OF UNIONTOWN MALL ALONG RT. 40.  WHEN TRAFFIC IS TURNING FROM WESTBOUND ROUTE 40 INTO UNIONTOWN MALL, THE REST OF THE WESTBOUND ROUTE 40 TRAFFIC SITS THERE EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NO TRAFFIC CROSSING THEIR LANES AND TURNING INTO MOUNT SAINT MACRINA.  MUST HAVE BEEN TWENTY CARS\TRUCKS SITTING THERE IDLING FOR NO REASON AT ALL.  CHECK EACH INTERSECTION YOU PASS THROUGH AND SEE WHETHER YOU'RE SITTING THERE WITH NO TRAFFIC COMING THE OPPOSITE WAY.  ANOTHER GOOD EXAMPLE IS THE NORTHERN END OF TOLL ROUTE 43 WHERE IT JOINS RT. 51 IN LARGE.  EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO TRAFFIC COMING ALONG ROUTE 51 EITHER DIRECTION...LIKE SUNDAY MORNINGS, THE TRAFFIC COMING OFF TOLL 43 SITS THERE FOR A CONSIDERABLE PERIOD OF TIME UNNECESSARILY IDLING AND WASTING FUEL.

PASSPORT RENEWALS IN THIRTEEN DAYS?  YEP.  ABOUT THIRTEEN DAYS AGO WE REALIZED OUR PASSPORTS WOULD EXPIRE WITHIN SIX MONTHS OF WHEN WE ARE TRAVELING TO EUROPE IN LATE OCTOBER.  THE RULE IS YOUR PASSPORT MUST BE STILL VALID FOR SIX MONTHS WHEN YOU LEAVE THE COUNTRY.

WE VISITED AAA IN UNIONTOWN AND HAD OUR PHOTOS TAKEN THERE. THEN WE WENT ONLINE AND GOT A PASSPORT APPLICATION FOR EACH OF US.  WE COMPLETED THE FORMS AND TOOK THEM TO THE UNIONTOWN POST OFFICE.  IF WE JUST FILED THEM, IT WOULD TAKE 13 WEEKS OR MORE--WE WERE TOLD--, BUT IF WE PAID EXTRA TO EXPEDITE THEM WE COULD EXPECT THEM IN ABOUT FOUR WEEKS.  SINCE OUR TRIP IS IN LATE OCTOBER, WE DIDN'T WANT TO RISK NOT HAVING THE NEW PASSPORTS BY OUR DEPARTURE DATE.  SO, WE PAID THE EXTRA FEE, AND ALSO PAID EXTRA TO HAVE THE POSTAL SERVICE'S PRIORITY MAIL TO THE PASSPORT OFFICE...AND BACK TO US.

WE HAVE NO MAIL DELIVERY IN OUR LITTLE VILLAGE, SO WHEN I VISITED THE POST OFFICE TO PICK UP OUR MAIL THIS PAST MONDAY...THERE WERE THE PASSPORTS.  AS I SAID...IT TOOK ONLY  THIRTEEN DAYS.  REMEMBER, THIS WAS NOT A NEW APPLICATION...BUT A RENEWAL.  BUT I STILL FIND IT AMAZING WHEN THE GOVERNMENT DOES ANYTHING THAT QUICKLY.

--------------------------------------------------------

A personal story about my beloved dad who died in 1996.  He had dementia for about five years prior to his death.  Well into his decline, at a time when he didn't know who I was, or my brother, or our wives, and he could no longer completely feed himself or tend to personal hygiene, etc.  I was sitting with him one day while mom was either playing the organ for church services or shopping.  Every once in a while dad would utter truly profound statements and this is one every person considering retirement...and those already retired should read and heed.

Out of the fog of dad's dimentia one day he said with emphasis:  "I know why I'm like this....!"

I  replied, "What did you say?"

He repeated...."I know why I'm like this"

I asked, "Like what?"

Dad said, "I don't know anybody...don't know anything, I don't even know where the bathroom is.

I said, "Well, OK, why are you like this...?"

He said, waving his arm... "Because I sat down in this damn chair...and never got up!"

Dad had a pressure-packed job at H.J. Heinz Company on Pittsburgh's northside.  He was personally responsible for ordering all the cardboard boxes, all the jars, glue for all labels, etc.for every product that was produced at that plant.  He did NOT order tinplate for cans...and did NOT order labels.  He took very seriously his responsibility to be sure there was always packaging materials on hand in sufficient numbers to handle the millions of products that were shipped out of that plant.  He spent many an evening making sure nothing had been overlooked.  My recollection is he held that job for about twenty years.  And there was never a lost shift due to a lack of  packaging materials to put the finished product into.

Altogether he was employed by Heinz for 46 years.

Dad retired at 62 and having that weight lifted off his shoulders, for the first time in many years, he could relax and rest.  That was ok for a short time, but we felt it was not in his best interests to just sit...and do little or nothing.  We prodded him many times about his mental and physical activity, but he rebuffed our intrusions with comments like, "I earned this opportunity relax."

We often try to get him involved in doing various things.  We urged him to come visit us in Fayette County where we had a tiny, 6-acre farmette.  We told him we would keep him busy there...something he enjoyed since he spent his summers as a boy on his grandparents' farm in Bedford County.  One of his joys was driving our old 1953 Ford Golden Jubilee tractor.  But he most often declined to come.

As dad correctly said, "I sat down in this damn chair and never got up."  By the time he figured that out, it was too late.  I believe the inactivity affected him mentally and physically, and contributed to his decline.

We tell this story not to diminsh the memory of the finest, smartest, most honest and most responsible, and hardest working  man I have ever knownInstead we tell the story to warn those soon to retire, and those already retired that with our minds just like our bodies....either use it...or lose it.  --Bob Logue
